Heavily grogged clay produces an attractive open texture when turned. The exposed grog is lighter colour because the soda vapour does not react with it as much as the clay body. |

A piece of thin rope was pressed into this pot when very wet, to leave impressions evocative of a field of wheat. This is a very ancient method of simple decoration, but is very effective. |

The runic incisions on the shoulder of this barrel have been glazed over to create contrast with the lower section of the pot. |
